FAQ

  • How much Thai do I actually need as a digital nomad?

About 30 phrases gets you 90% of daily Bangkok/Chiang Mai life — ordering, transport, market negotiation, asking directions. Most nomads who learn these phrases see noticeably better service + prices within 2 weeks.

  • Should I learn Thai script or stick to romanization?

For survival mode, romanization is fine — you're saying phrases, not reading menus. But Thai script unlocks the menus, signs, and apps that have no English. Maa's Layer 3 covers the alphabet from zero.

  • Is tone really that important for survival phrases?

Yes. The classic example: ม้า (mâa, horse) vs หมา (mǎa, dog). Wrong tone = different word. The good news: most nomads only need to nail tones on the 30-40 phrases they use daily, not the whole language.

  • Where do most foreigners get stuck?

Two places: (1) the falling tone — they go flat-low instead of high-then-down; (2) ordering food without specifying spice level (assume it'll be spicy unless you say ไม่เผ็ด). Both are fixed in a few minutes of practice.
